New events and exhibitions are popping up at London’s royal palaces, just in time for spring and summer travel! Everything from high fashion to heroic knights will be on tap this year, with fun and festivities spread between Kensington Palace, Hampton Court Palace and the Tower of London.
Jousting at Hampton Court Palace
Summer is about to get a lot livelier around Hampton Court Palace, where knights and destriers will be gathering for a good old-fashioned joust in July.
The horseback sport was a favorite of King Henry VIII, and the tiltyard at his summer residence was often the scene of charging horses and splintering lances.
You can experience the spectacle and ceremony of the royal court joust this summer, when it returns to thrilling life on July 15 & 16, 2017 at Hampton Court Palace.
The jousting tournaments will be included with regular Hampton Court admission.
Enlightened Princesses Exhibition at Kensington Palace
In the Age of Enlightenment, the scientific breakthroughs which emerged from Great Britain would reshape human understanding of the world. It was no accident so many game-changing thinkers came from Britain; three princesses were nurturing the sciences and embracing the new discoveries of the day.
You can discover the passions of Princesses Caroline, Augusta and Charlotte in a new exhibition at Kensington Palace: Enlightened Princesses: Caroline, Augusta, Charlotte and the Shaping of the Modern World. You’ll find artifacts from some of the world’s greatest collections, including everything from toys to botanical drawings, along with a heaping helping of Girl Power. This exhibition runs June 22 – November 12, 2017.
Celebrating Princess Diana at Kensington Palace
Jump from the 18th century to the 20th century with a fascinating journey through the iconic styles of Princess Diana. As a princess, she would become a fashion icon, but for Diana, it wasn’t just about wearing nice clothes; she was cultivating an image and telling her own story through fashion.
Get a look at the style Diana used to express herself throughout her public life at Kensington Palace, now through February 28th, 2018. Diana: Her Fashion Story is included in your Kensington Palace admission. Book early! This popular attraction sells out in busy periods.
Armoury in Action at the Tower of London
It’s fine looking at museum exhibits, but it’s way more fun to play with them — which is why the Tower of London has introduced this new hands-on experience exploring a thousand years of defending the realm.
Kids and adults alike can discover the real feeling of drawing back a bow to fire an arrow, dress a king in armor for battle, fire a cannon with an artillery captain, and design a Victorian musket.
It’s an immersive experience which truly brings the Tower of London — and British history — to life. Armoury in Action is included in your Tower of London admission.
There’s so much to discover at London’s Royal Palaces this year, we couldn’t possibly fit it all here. Add London’s Royal Palaces to your trip any time of year, but if you’re visiting London this summer, don’t miss these great happenings!
