Now then, fellow travellers, what springs to mind when you read the following lines:
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered –
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he today that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother…
If you answered the Hundred Years’ War you would of course be correct. It’s from William Shakespeare’s play Henry V, and it’s part of the rousing address from the king to his outnumbered troops on the eve of the Battle of Agincourt in France – an engagement from which he and his men emerge victorious against all odds. The year 2014, you might also be aware, marks the 450th birthday of the Bard himself.
If you answered World War Two you’d be just as right. Stephen E Ambrose wrote the original Band of Brothers book chronicling the heroic exploits of Easy Company in France and Germany a good 500 years after Agincourt. The novel’s opening page actually quotes the same Shakespeare speech, although in the Steven Spielberg/Tom Hanks mini-series it’s recited by one of the soldiers at the end. And the year 2014, you’ll most probably know, marks the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings themselves.
The point is: if your heart’s set on a UK vacation but you just can’t decide between a spot of Shakespeare or the Spirit of the London Blitz, with Virgin Vacations you don’t have to – you can actually build your own affordable travel package to experience both.
We’re rather proud of our range of vacations to the UK – from escorted trips like Affordable Britain and Classic Britain to a fabulous choice of independent packages for the capital like London Fling, London Theatre Experience, and London with Warner Bros Studio Tour – The Making of Harry Potter. But we also appreciate that some travellers need a little more flexibility to really make the most of their trip. Which is where our Build Your Own Vacation facility comes in. It’s a simple online process and it’s tailored for you. Just give us your preferred dates and destinations and we’ll do the rest.
So, for instance, you can experience a Shakespeare’s Globe Exhibition & Theatre Tour in the heart of London’s historic Bankside district – exploring this faithful reconstruction of the open-air playhouse designed in 1599. And also take a Half-Day Churchill’s London Tour of the city’s wartime sites in a period vehicle – seeing churches still in ruins, the statue of Sir Winston Churchill and the Cenotaph, with the option to visit the Churchill War Rooms. And on the same vacation enjoy a full-day excursion to Warwick Castle, Stratford – visiting Shakespeare’s birthplace and childhood school – the university city of Oxford and the beautiful Cotswolds.
Your kind of UK vacation, our pleasure. Because at Virgin Vacations we like to keep your options open.
